Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a procedure used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. If necessary, polyps or other types of abnormal tissue can be removed through the scope during a colonoscopy. It is also possible to take tissue samples (biopsies) during a colonoscopy.

  • It's an outpatient procedure and hospitalisation is not needed.

What are the signs that you should have a colonoscopy?

Rectal bleeding, change in bowel habits including loose stools (diarrhoea) constipation or narrower than normal stools, abdominal pain, feeling like your bowel isn’t emptying completely, stomach pain or cramps, bloating, sudden weight loss.

Are you awake during a colonoscopy?

You will be completely asleep during the procedure
